Modern Temptations: What Would Jesus Do in…
Temptation is nothing new—it has been part of human life for as long as we can remember. But in today’s…
I stumbled into storytelling with a heart full of questions and curiosity. Words became my refuge, faith my foundation. Over the years, I’ve learned that stories aren’t just told, but they’re lived. Now, as an author, pastor, and believer, I capture the truths that make us, challenge us, and help us ascend the ladder of life better.
In grade school, I got into fights and learned how to write. In high school, I fought less and discovered literature. In college, I majored in English and minored in romance. At seminary, I learned Biblical Hebrew and Greek.
I enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War, doing office work. My wife, Becky, passed away in 2009 after 10 years of dialysis. I married Cheryl, and we now have three children and seven grandchildren. I have worked since I was 15 and have pastored a church for 25 years. My strength has been Jesus, and He always will be.
This book is dedicated to God, without whom none of this would have been possible. I thank God, my wife, Cheryl, and our two Pomeranian puppies, Hansel and Gretel, for their love and support during the writing of this book. Marvelous Book Publishers helped with editing and publishing. I pray it be a blessing to those who read it.
You can alter the world and alter your own life.
Be present at the burning of Joan of Arc, and join a history class where the Lusitania gets another chance. Experience the end of the world, and learn what to do about it. Visit “the homes of the stars” and a small, peaceful trailer court. Remember death in the past, and enjoy eternal life forever. Watch the atomic bomb fall on Hiroshima, and dream of a better way. A job is lost because a baby’s life is saved. Hear the author plead “happy” in court while in handcuffs and chains. Let God revolutionize your life as a Christian hippy. Analyze things that “they” say we are supposed to accept. Ride a bike and climb trees while RVs and boats roll by.
“Why not smile and sing on a beautiful day like today?”
The author is a seminary graduate, a Baptist pastor, and a survivor of 65 years in this world. He is also having a lovely time which he shares in the pages of Alterworld Storybook.
I saw a person dressed in white, sitting beside my bed.
“Hello, Marshall.”
“Hello.” I didn’t know who it was, but I didn’t feel afraid or angry.
I asked, “Who are you?”
“I’m your guardian angel,” came the soft reply. “I’ve come to help you.”
I didn’t know I needed help, or maybe I just wasn’t admitting it.
“I’m here to guard your mind and your emotions.”
I lay back down, though I needed to get up for work.
“Your job will be okay. Everything will be okay.”
I waited to see what would happen next.
“Look at how tense you are. You are fighting so many battles. You will win them all.”
I relaxed a little.
“God knows how well you are doing. He is pleased that you try so hard.
“He knows what the kids said to you and did to you in grade school. You’re still trying to prove them wrong. You don’t need to. They were wrong.
“You remember what the boss said about you the day you were fired. He didn’t understand what a good job you were doing.”
I was glad my guardian angel had stopped by.
“You wonder if people understand you now. You wonder how they feel about you. You wonder if you’re doing a good job. You wonder if you’re okay.”
With that, the angel looked into my eyes with a steady gaze. I saw approval, love, kindness, and reassurance.
“You are so tired. You could sleep for days. You feel confused, even though you know the answers. You fight memories and phantoms in your mind. You want so much to help those you love.”
I fell asleep and saw people I love. They were smiling and happy. I saw my problems being solved and uncertainty dissolving away.
I could still hear the angel. “Jesus died for your sin. So why do you let it torment you? It’s all gone. You’re forgiven.”
I dreamed that I was sleeping on a bed so soft that I sank into it. Everything was soft and warm.
“You fear the future, so you have less happiness in the present. You want to live, but you keep choosing pathways of death.”
In a vision, I saw Jesus ascending into heaven after His resurrection. It was about life.
I woke up smiling. There was nothing to fear about myself or anyone or anything. I was loved and understood. I was doing well.
My guardian angel was gone. I got up and went to work. I felt confident, relaxed, hopeful, and warm. My heart and mind were guarded by a gentle sentry. God was on guard through His angel. I felt secure and unafraid.
